Vegan breakfast in Stockholm (in 3-4 days)
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, and with its 14 islands and more than 50 bridges, it is the perfect destination to take a dive into Scandinavian history and reality. In addition to the various museums and tourist spots and attractions there is also a wide range of culinary offerings. Even for those who are vegan, there is a chance to try typical dishes in a plant-based version. Read on to find out where to eat a vegan breakfast in Stockholm if you only have 3-4 days available.
Some important information for restaurants in Stockholm
There are some small precautions worth knowing before setting out to discover a new city. Here I leave you with some information that I think is essential when visiting restaurants in Stockholm:
- Card is king
Just as the title of this section says, card is king. In practice this means that in Stockholm it is practically mandatory to pay by card almost everywhere, and restaurants are no exception. In many restaurants you will find the words "cashless restaurant," or "cashless restaurant." So equip yourself with a card that can make international payments. - Tipping or no tipping?
Whenever we change countries there is always a moment of embarrassment or uncertainty when we have to pay the bill. In fact, each nation has different habits and customs when it comes to tipping. On our first day we asked a waitress how it works in Stockholm. She told us that waitresses and waiters receive good pay and that (in the case of their restaurant) tips would be divided among the whole team at the end of the service. It is therefore up to you whether or not you want to leave a tip.
È però anche vero che quando ti portano la macchinetta per pagare, sullo schermo si può sempre selezionare la percentuale del conto che si vuole aggiungere come mancia. (solitamente c’è una scelta tra 5%, 10% e 15%).
Where to have a vegan breakfast in Stockholm
Let's start with the first meal to start the day and also the meal that so many people only have time for when they are on vacation. You will find many sweet or savory options to start your day with a vegan breakfast in Stockholm.
In the next few paragraphs I introduce you to my favorite Stockholm breakfasts and brunches:
1. STHLM Brunch Club
STHLM Brunch Club was definitely my most favorite place during my stay in Stockholm. It is located just a few minutes walk from Central Station. As you can guess from the name it is a restaurant that serves only breakfast and brunch. The menu is not entirely vegan but you can find pancakes, English breakfast, acai bowls, and avocado toast in a vegan version. We liked it so much that we went back twice in just 4 days.
Important: STHLM Brunch does not accept reservations and does not have a lot of seating. A first-come, first-served rule applies. If you arrive and the tables are all full, you will be asked to leave your phone number and you will be called back as soon as a table becomes free. We had to wait 30 minutes but took the opportunity to take a walk in the park nearby.
If you also visit STHLM Brunch Club, I definitely recommend you try the "Vegan brekkie" English breakfast which is served with scrambled tofu, vegan sausages, potato puffer, mushrooms, beans, tomato jam and crusty bread.
The avocado toast that you can see below was also very good. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing about the pancakes which were a bit chewy. I think this is because they are being "veganized" from their menu to expand the vegan choice.
Vete Katten
Another little gem in Stockholm is definitely the Vete-Katten confectionery. Operating since 1928, this bakery is worth a visit if only for the atmosphere inside. You'll find tourists and locals alike sipping their first morning coffee, but also plenty of locals indulging in a treat at any time of the day.
Unfortunately, the vegan choice is not very wide, but everything we tried was really delicious. A must try is the Büllar with berries and cinnamon and cardamom. Büllar are the typical Swedish dessert with the scent and flavor of cinnamon and cardamom. If you have never tried büllar, they are very similar to "cinnamon buns" (or vice versa).
Here's all we ate at Vete-katten:
Kafé Plattan
If, on the other hand, you feel like trying a 100% vegan restaurant so you can order just about anything then I recommend going to Kafé Plattan. It is not really a restaurant but more of a bar that serves some options for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and even frozen pizza that is heated on the spot.
We went there for breakfast and the quality was average. What we really liked, however, was the location. In fact Kafé Plattan is right in the center inside the cultural center (kulturhuset). So after breakfast we were able to look at two very interesting exhibitions. The exhibitions are not permanent, but I invite you to take a tour of the cultural center to find out what's new there right now.
In general I must say that for being a Nordic capital, I expected there to be more vegan options for breakfast in the non-vegan restaurants. But the options that were there were really delicious.
Another treat that I want to share with you are the chocolate balls that can be found in virtually any café or bakery and are usually vegan.
If, on the other hand, now is not the time to travel, I invite you to look at my vegan easy recipes to do from the comfort of your own home.
